A The "Monster of Lake Tianchi" in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province, northeast China, is back in the news after several recent sightings. The director of a local tourist office, Meng Fanying, said the monster, which seemed to be black in colour, was ten metres from the edge of the lake during the most recent sighting. "It jumped out of the water like a seal—about 200 people on Changbai's western peak saw it," he said. Although no one really got a clear look at the mysterious creature, Xue Junlin, a local photographer, claimed that its head looked like a horse. In another recent sighting, a group of soldiers claim they saw an animal moving on the surface of the water. The soldiers, who were walking along the side of the lake, watched the creature swimming for about two minutes. "It was greenish-black and had a round head with 10-centimetre horns(角)", one of the soldiers said. A third report came from Li Xiaohe, who was visiting the lake with his family. He claims to have seen a round black creature moving quickly through the water. After three or four hundred metres it dived into the water. Ten minutes later the monster appeared again and repeated the action. Mr Li Xiaohe said that he and his family were able to see the monster clearly because the weather was fine and the lake was calm. There have been reports of monsters in Lake Tianchi since the beginning of the last century, although no one has seen one close up. Some photos have been taken but they are not clear because it was too far away. Many people think the monster may be a distant cousin of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. They also think that there might be similar creatures in other lakes around the world. Scientists, however, are sceptical. They say that the low-temperature lake is unlikely to be able to support such large living creatures. Lake Tianchi is the highest volcanic lake in the world. It is 2,189 metres high and covers an area of about ten square kilometres. In places it is more than 370 metres deep. 1. How many sightings of the monster does the article report? __________________________________________________________________ 2. Who saw the monster clearly, and why? __________________________________________________________________ 3. Which description of the monster is most detailed? __________________________________________________________________ 4. When was the monster first sighted? __________________________________________________________________ 5. What is special about Lake Tianchi? __________________________________________________________________ B The Bermuda Triangle (百慕大三角) is also called Devil’s Triangle. It is an imaginary(幻想的) area in the Atlantic Ocean. It extends(延伸) more than one million square kilometers between the island of Bermuda, the coast of southern Florida and the island of Puerto Rico. Drawing an imaginary line to link these three places creates the three sides of a triangle. The mystery surrounding the Bermuda Triangle is that the area seems to be extremely dangerous to airplanes and ships. Some people believe that at least fifty ships and twenty planes have disappeared there during the past one hundred years. The accident that first suggested the danger of the Bermuda Triangle was the disappearance of five American Navy planes in 1945. The planes carried fourteen people on a training flight. They never returned. And a plane sent to search for them also disappeared. Newspaper reporters and other writers called the planes the Lost Patrol. They began trying to explain the tragic events. Some of the explanations were strange. One writer said there were powerful forces under the water. These forces interfered(干扰) with communication devices and caused planes to crash and ships to sink. Another writer said creatures from outer space guarded the area. These creatures pulled the planes and ships to another planet. Some critics(评论家) said the Bermuda Triangle stories were false. They said most of the events that took place in the area could be explained scientifically. And they said most of the accidents linked to the Bermuda Triangle did not happen there. Critics said only about five real accidents happened within the triangle’s borders. The United States Coast Guard agreed. It said the stories about the Bermuda Triangle were mostly science fictions and should not be taken seriously. 1. What made the Bermuda Triangle special? A. It extends over one million square kilometers. B. Its bad weather. C. Its beautiful scenery. D. It’s not safe for planes and ships. 2. Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “tragic” in Paragraph 4? A. Interesting . B. Terrible. C. Pleasant. D. Moving. C Once people called them“flying saucers(碟形物)”.Now they usually have a different name, UFOs — Unidentified Flying Objects. There are hundreds of stories and some photographs of these spaceships from other worlds and the “men” in them. Pauline Coombs also lives in Wales. In April 1977 she was in her car with her children when she saw a light in the sky. she said,“It was in front of us. It was no bigger than a football and yellow. The object came nearer to the car and followed us. The children began to cry. Near the farm where we lived, the car suddenly stopped. I jumped out with the children and we ran up the road. The thing still followed us. When I got in the house I was so afraid that I couldn't speak.” Has anyone ever found an empty UFO?The governments of many countries do not like to talk about this, but scientists in Spitsbergen in Norway think that they found a UFO. They said, “We thought at first that it was a Russian plane but now we are sure that it is not. We have never seen the metal(金属) in this object anywhere before. In fact,we have no idea at all what it is.” A much strange thing happened in Gdansk in Poland. There, an object fell into the sea near the town. Then, people on the beach saw a man. He could not speak and did not seem to know where he was. They took him to the hospital for help. The doctors saw that he had seven fingers on each hand. The man wore metal clothes and he had a metal bracelet(手镯) on his hand. When the doctors took off the bracelet, the man died. They cut open his body and found that some of the parts were very different from those of a normal man. True or False questions. ( )1.UFO refer to a flying machine. ( )2. The teachers put the fourteen boys into the same room and asked each one to draw a picture of the spaceship. They showed the same object. ( )3. The light Pauline saw in the sky is as small as a football. ( )4. scientists in Spitsbergen in Norway believe the object they found was a UFO. ( )5. A strange man was found dead in the sea in Gdansk in Poland. |
